State Parks

State ParksWith so many of our natural wonders being destroyed in the name of progress, the state park system offers our descendants a way to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of America and Mexico.
Protected by the IUCN, these parks offer a refuge for those wishing to get away from the rat race and relax in well-managed isolation.

With well over 3,000 state parks already set-up these wide spread areas provide an ideal locale for anyone who enjoys camping, whether they be, families, hikers, couples or even survival experts!

Just within California there are more than 270 park units which contain a huge diversity of flora and fauna. Trying to organise a network of campsites on this scale is no mean feat and so, in general, each state has their own department/website tasked with tring to point people in the right directions. They do this by providing information on the sites, including the availability, type of site, write-up and facilities offered. The prices of pitches can vary but from my research, most seem to be within the £15-30 (pn) range.

One of the best ways I have found to locate parks in your vicinity is to use L.L.Bean's Park Search, With this you can not only find suitable destinations anywhere around the world but also the activities that are present once you arrive. If you are just keeping your search to the US, About.Com offer a directory which lists contact details for each state department and information about State Park Camping.

State Parks are generally kept to the highest standards and accordingly offer excellent facilities. For example many parks will offer RV sites with water and electricity hook-ups, suiting those who like the great outdoors but can't live without their home comforts.
